You won't C me

A moment of silence, please, for my keyboard's letter "C," which finally disappeared yesterday afternoon.

Also in danger of extinction: S, D, V, B, N, and M. (The "D" is in particular peril, having dwindled down to a desperate dot.) Is anyone else looking at blank keys on their laptops? I've only had this machine since May, so I'm wondering if I should have sprung for one of those keyboard "skins" for iBooks. Certainly, that would help with the cat hair. Rumor has it, though, that skins mess up the screens. True?

And since I'm asking questions, let me pose another random one: There is a cinema term that means "frame within a frame," and refers to the movie screen appearing to fragment into many smaller screens, each with its own discrete action going on. Can anyone out there jog my memory as to what this term might be?

Parts of my memory lately are as coy and elusive as the letter C.

Could it be mise en abyme? Wikipedia has a short article on it, but French Wikipedia's version is much better: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mise_en_abyme.

Have you tried flipping your keyboard up and cleaning it? its pretty easy. I have an iSkin but i never left it on when I closed my ibook.....

so you want something other than split screen or inset?

If it's any consolation, my mother has worn off all the characters on her TiVo remote, which is not even the original one, which would still have been newer than mine (now 5.5 years and counting). I think it's her body chemistry. She is also easily tarnished by silver. I am too, but less so, and I guess I watch less television...

Nice Beatles reference in the title, by the way.

For me, it's N, what with my name starting with it and all.

Hmm... maybe it is my body chemistry? Or maybe it's just the fact that I have longish fingers that strike those lower keys in a particular way with my (not long) fingernails?

Christina, I think "mise en abyme" may be exactly what I'm looking for! It's odd that I don't remember that as the word I looked up a couple months ago, but it does fit the bill.

On my last iBook, I did flip up the keyboard to clean it. But then I got a little too fastidious and started plucking up each individual key in order to do an even more thorough cleaning. Suffice it to say those keys are not designed to be popped on and off. So our old machine (which we still use occasionally) now lacks the key for "G," which never would reattach. It is possible to type a G by pounding the place where the G used to be, but that gives one's typing "gait" a limping new rhythm.

I've got one for you. What do they call a stage comedy that depends on doors opening and closing with precise timing to keep characters confused until the final act?

Wow, Aqua -- you are doing something right with your keyboard letters at least.

What happened when you took the vacuum to the keys, btw?

I don't have cat hair behind the LCD (yet), but that would drive me crazy. I accidentally squashed a gnat on my screen this past summer (meant to move him, but unfortunately smeared him instead), and I still can't totally erase the evidence of that buggy tragedy on my screen.

C and S have been rubbed off my iBook keyboard, and D, A, and E are on their way out. . . I think it has something to do with copying and saving, but I'd think that the command key symbol would also be rubbing off. So strange.

I'm looking forward to seeing your baby pics. . . I hope you'll share some with us!

I felt so svelte, if exhausted, after I dropped those 35 pounds of baby weight. Unfortunately, I was a little heavier than usual before my pregnancy, and now those pounds seem to have permanently attached themselves in some awkward places. I hope you have better luck than I do in that department. But boy, was it ever a relief to lose all that weight!

May your baby have a small head (unlike mine)--makes birth MUCH easier! :\

I came across this blog just with a random Google search. I also lack a Google account, hence the Anonymous identity. I would, however, like to add my name to the list of people now lacking iBook letters. I bought this iBook a little while ago now, but I never dreamed that my keys would turn to blanks. If I turn the Mac a certain way so the light hits the keys just right, i can see skeletons of letters in which they use to be. I’m currently missing A, S, E and L, and D is on his way out, as well as C. W and M are also struggling… Funny, the Enter button, probably one of the most popular buttons on the keyboard, looks like it’s never been touched… Anyway, just thought I’d add my story to the mix.

Cheers.
